Defensin in a skin cell, 3D fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Stacked images showing defensin (red) clustered around the nucleus (blue) of a kera

Defensin in a skin cell, 3D fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Stacked images showing defensin (red) clustered around the nucleus (blue) of a keratinocyte (epidermal skin cell). Defensin is an antimicrobial peptide and is important for preventing sepsis (blood poisoning), particularly due to burn injuries. It is thought that it may also play a role in protein regulation. Magnification: x900 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
