Exterior view of the C12th square keep of Scarborough Castle, North Yorkshire, with its curtain wall, bridge & barbican built by King Henry II.

General exterior view of the C12th square keep of Scarborough Castle with its curtain wall, bridge & barbican. Built by Plantagenet King Henry II (1154-89) to resemble the Norman White Tower in London. Put under siege by rebel Barons in 1312 and twice during the Civil War when the castle was blasted with canons. The tower was further damaged in WWI by shelling from German warships. The castle occupies the former sites of a prehistoric settlement & a fortified Roman signal station, on a prominent headland between two bays & with sheer drops to the sea.
