Louis Beauperthuy. Portrait of the Venezuelan physician Louis Beauperthuy (1807-1871). In 1854 he proposed that yellow fever was spread by mosquitoes. Yellow fever was a great danger to Europeans and North Americans who travelled to tropical climates. Beauperthuy's idea was dismissed by general medical opinion. His theory was proved correct almost fifty years later by epidemiologist Walter Reed.
