Goniatite fossils. The goniatites were primitive ammonites (extinct cephlapod molluscs) that flourished during the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian periods (dating from 400 to 251 million years ago). They were a free swimming animal, possessing a head with two well developed eyes and grasping tentacles. They swam by squirting water out of the body cavity.
