If shillings were not abund-ant, timber was; and there was more than enough in the oldstructure to build a modern house. It was eight-sided, andstraddled the rocks like a wooden Colossus. The main timberswere ninety feet in height and eighteen inches square, and musthave been of primeval growth. The base diameter of the build-ing was forty feet. It was built to endure, and a thousand yearswould have been a moderate limit to its usefulness. In 1789 itwas ceded by the State to the United States.
