The foot stalk is the portion that is used and is the first vege- table of the season from the gar- den; cultivated to a great extent and is indispensable wherever it is known. Sow the seed early in the spring in rows 1 foot apart on rich ground; the second year after plant- ing they can be removed in autumn to the permanent spot allotted to them; plant the roots 2 feet apart each way in ground that is well en- riched, at least 2 feet deep.
