Handbook of insanity for practitioners and students . picture of the woman on the right). The combination of the contraction of the three groups of musclesmentioned produces the careworn expression of the upper half ofthe face; perhaps the pyramidal muscle of the nose also takes partby its lessened activity, because the antagonistic middle bundlesof the frontal muscle may then act more vigorously in an upwarddirection. At all events, the resultant right-angled furrowing ofthe forehead is to be regarded as a sign of melancholia. A less constant feature, but one which materially increases themelancholic expression, is the marked character of the naso-labialfolds. This, almost alone, imparts a sorrowful appearance to thelower half of the face in the picture of the woman, but that ex-pression is due mainly to the drooping of the angles of the mouthand the protrusion of the lower lip. This woman had torn thehair from her head in her great fear ; the folded hands intensify thegeneral anxious expression. HANDBOOK OF INSANITY. KIRCHHOFF. Plate
