(VIII) Benjamin Franklin, the only child to reach maturity ofJohn and Elizabeth (Van Gundy) Schweyer, was born in Mifflintown,Juniata county, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1838. His education was ac-quired in the public and private schools of Mifflintown, and at an earlyage he commenced his career as a contributor to the pages of thecounty papers. In 1870 he became the editor and proprietor of theJuniata Sentinel, a Whig paper, established December 9, 1846, which. ^^.X^2A^t^>^^<^- • HISTORY OF THE JUNIATA VALLEY 1223 was originally a Whig sheet, but was at the time of Mr. Schweyerspurchase a Republican paper, and he very naturally took up the causeof the Republican party upon becoming the owner. He Ijecame theowner in 1873 of the Juniata Republican, a stock paper that was de-fected by President Andrew Johnsons movement. Mr. Schweycr con-solidated the two papers under the name of the Juniata Sentinel andRepublican, and continued as owner up to the time of his death,April 7, 1913. It has always been the main Republican paper of Juni-ata county, and has never wavered in its allegiance to the Republicanparty. While his influence was an important factor to be reckoned with,Mr. Schweyer never desired nor accepted puljlic office. He was a mem-ber of the Pennsylvania Reserves during the civil war, and was presentat the battle of Antietam. His religious affiliations were with the Pres-byterian
