GAVAGR 503 If very large injections are used, a normal saline solution of 7 : 1000(1 drachm to 1 pint) should be employed to avoid the abstraction ofvital salts from the intestinal wall, with consequent passage of waterinto the tissues, making them boggy, due to the law of osmosis. Ifthe saline solution is stronger than this, it abstracts water from thebowel wall and causes thirst. Rectal injections are very useful torelieve thirst and keep the kidneys active after abdominal operations. Distention of the bowel by injection produces little if any effect onthe circulation and respiration, but the passage of large amounts ofwarmed fluid directly into the closed abdominal cavity causes deathrapidly. Fig. Showing the introduction of a soft catheter through the right side of the nose in thepractice of gavage. GAVAGE. Gavage is a term applied to the forced feeding of patients who willnot or can not swallow food. The method is often employed innourishing the insane who refuse food. A soft-rubber catheter is 504 REMEDIAL MEASURES OTHER THAN DRUGS. passed through one of the nasal chambers back into the pharynx, asmall funnel is attached to its outer extremity, and the milk, or beef-broth, or other liquid food is by this means introduced into the pharynx, where the muscles of deglutition seize it. The term gavage is alsocorrectly employed to the forced feeding of a patient by an oesophagealtube, as in the use of lavage. (See Lavage.) HEAT. Heat is used locally for a number of purposes in the same manneras is cold, and, as was stated i
