A stained glass window by Frederick Preedy depicting the Prophet Abraham, St Lawrence Church, Weston-Sub-Edge, Gloucestershire
A stained glass window by Frederick Preedy depicting the Old Testament Prophet Abraham, St Lawrence Church, Weston-Sub-Edge, Gloucestershire. The lower section of the light depicts the Sacrifice of Abraham's son, Isaac, and the intervention of the angel. All the windows in St John the Baptist & St Lawrence Church in Weston-Sub-Edge are filled with stained glass designed by Frederick Preedy (1820 -1898) who was born at Offenham, Worcestershire near Evesham. A great deal of his work can still be seen in churches in the Midlands of England. Preedy was unusual in being both an architect and stained glass artist. He often embellished churches he had designed, or restorations he had overseen with his own designs for stained glass. Installed circa 1861, the ten windows at Weston-sub-Edge were all designed by Preedy, whose sytle recaptures that of early medieval glass painters; with simple (one may say "naive") figurative work , and bold colours. His windows are generally liberally embellished with vines and flower motifs.
