Joseph was born at Osage Mission. Kansas. April9, 1871, and is a son of Barnard and Susan Galla-. HISTORY OF IDAHO 815 gher, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and thelatter of Germany. Mr. Galla,^;hers father, whowas a farmer all of his life, passed away at the ageof eighty years, in 1909, the mother having died in1885. when sixty years of age. They were theparents of seven children, of whom Joseph was the yonngest. After attending the public scliools of Marshallcounty, Kansas, Mr. Gallagher apprenticed himselfto the butchers trade, to which he served threeyears, then returning to work on his fathers farm,where he remained five years. In 1S96 he came toIdaho and settled in Patterson, in Lemhi county,where he took up a homestead and remaiued forsix years. Having met with hut indifferent success,Mr. Gallagher sold his interests there and movedto Dubois.
