Mr. Muchnick, believing thatit is not at all improbable that the same objection has been piston valves are used, are made considerably larger thanwith slide valves, it may be supposed that the greater backpressure due to insufficient exhaust opening in the latter toexhaust the greater amount of steam admitted into the cylin-der on account of the double port opening cannot occur whenthe Allen principle is applied to the piston valve. The plan shown takes live steam at the center of the valvelike the piston valves in use on the Norfolk & Western Ry. The increase of power of the engine due to the improved r^-:7^/77:W.
