Educational institutions have been an important careof the province at all times. The common features of the generalsystem of education represented in elementary, secondary and col-lege institutions constitute the basis of educational work. Besidesthis there are normal schools, technical schools, a technical instituteand agricultural schools, directed and liberally supported by theprovince, besides the usual private, commercial and boarding schoolsfor boys and girls found in the Dairy Instruction at the Agricultural Schools The elementary schools are maintained in a satisfactory stateof efficiency. Country schools are liberally supported and newschools receive special support. Schools may be established insettlements with four resident ratepayers and eight children betweenthe ages of five and sixteen. Attendance up to the age of fifteenis strictly enforced. The minimum salary for country teachers isfixed by the Government at $840 per year. Provision is made forthe erection of teachers residences by public funds which gives 74 permanency in the tenure of teachers. Consolidation is makingrapid progress in the province. Ther are over fifty consolidations atpresent organized, and some of these already offer the best typeof training for boys and girls represented in a couple of years ofgeneral high school w
