The Animistic religions are first examined, theinvestigation moving on through the Ethnic religions,special attention being given to existing faiths, par-ticularly those with which our United Presbyterianmissionaries are brought into contact—Hinduism,Buddhism, Mohammedanism. Attention is also given to modern substitutes forChristianity—Mormonism, Theosophy, Christian Sci-ence, Spiritualism. Their literature is critically exam-ined and their influence upon society noted. 30. The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Department of Sociology Dr. Rankin It is the aim of this department to apply the socialteachings of the Scriptures to the social and industrialmovements and problems of our day, and thus preparethe future ministers of our Church to be sane and intelli-gent leaders of the religious and moral forces of societyin dealing with these matters. The best recent booksupon these problems furnish the basis for study. Theseare supplemented by assigned readings, class discus-sions, papers by students, and lectures by the Professor,and addresses by specialists on the subjects student is required to select a field for special in-vestigation and present for class discussion a carefullyprepared thesis.
