Buckyball molecule being held by a robotic hand. Conceptual computer artwork that might represent research into, or hi-tech automated production of, buckyball molecules. A buckyball, or buckminsterfullerene, is a structurally distinct form (allotrope) of carbon. It has 60 carbon atoms arranged in a spherical structure consisting of interlinking hexagonal and pentagonal rings. Buckyballs and other fullerenes are thought to potentially have a wide range of technological and medical uses.
