The interior condition can well be imaginedafter twenty-five years of use as a hay barn. A temporary woodenroof now shelters the adjoining building which is ninety-fivefeet long, with the roof overhanging on the side to cover thecorridor, which was built in the plainest, simplest fashion. In 1S03 a chapel was built at arancheria called by the Indians Mescaltitlan and by the SpaniardsSan Miguel, six miles from Santa Barbara. It was of adobesixty-five feet by twenty-seven feet. In 1807 eighteen adobebuildings were erected here. Near San Luis Obispo was a ranch-eria known as San ]Miguelito,and here in 1809 the Governor gavehis approval for the erection of a chapel.
