The three strains of Shorthorn cattle, known as the Bates, Booth, and Cruickshank, got their names from the famous breeders mentioned above. The Bates Shorthorns were famous for their size and large milk production, the Booth had great heart girth, a long hind quarter, and deep, mellow flesh, but lacked style, while the Cruickshank Short- horns were smaller but more compact than either the Bates or Booth strains.
