These boulders remind usof the hellur of the sagas, that is, the rocks, or large (flat)stones, which suggested to the Norsemen the name Hellu-land. The climate is extremely severe, ranging from cold tem-perate in the southern part to arctic on the Hudson the treeless portions of the coast and on the outer islandsthe flora and fauna present an almost purely circumpolarcharacter, and the air is raw and cold, especially when thewind comes from the sea. In the summer on the coast thesea is often at freezing point, and the air is not much warmereven in the warmest summer months on the southern partof the coast. In the
