Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge – View from Sidney Street
Sidney Sussex College was founded in 1596 by the Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex as a committed Puritan foundation reflecting the compulsion of the age to support the Reformation. The site had been inhabited by Franciscan monks for many centuries prior to the foundation of the college. Most of the college’s original buildings have been preserved over the centuries by refurbishment and maintenance. Among its alumni is Oliver Cromwell whose head is said to be buried in the College. William Wollaston, the moral philosopher, C T R Wilson, Nobel Laureate famed for his ‘Cloud Chamber’ experiments, and the politician David Owen are also among its alumni. The picture was drawn and engraved by J and H S Storer
