Alesund is a small town (pop. 45000) in M¿re og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Sunnm¿re, and the centre of the lesund Region. It is a sea port, fishing centre and cruise liner stopping point. But its most noted feature is its unusual architecture. Like many primarily wood-built towns in Norway, it has been all but destroyed several times by fire, After the last such fire in 1904, the town was rebuilt in stone, brick, and mortar in Jugendstil (Art Nouveau), the architectural style of the time. Here we see the town and surrounding areas viewed from Aksla, a hill overlooking the town.
