This version of a 19th century anaesthetic inhaler consists of a two-part vessel A and B containing a sponge soaked in sulfuric ether or chloroform, connected to a flexible tube D ending in a mouthpiece E. The inner part B contains a series of perforations and as it is screwed in or out it varies the amount of air drawn in over the sponges as the patient breathed in and thus the concentration of the air-ether mixture. Above the container is a valve C, containing a ball of cork, and which closes on inspiration and opens with expiration.
