Arctic icebreaker and helicopter. This is the nuclear-powered icebreaker ship Rossiya. Its helicopter is used for reconnaissance flights, where it checks whether the ice on the planned route ahead of the ship is thin enough to be broken by the ship's hull as it passes through it. The ship has two nuclear reactors: one is used to power the ship, and the other is the backup energy supply. Nuclear-powered icebreakers can only travel in cold waters, in order to cool their reactors. Photographed off Murmansk in the Russian Arctic in 2002.
