Young woman of Harcourt, near Caen. Caen had been a lace-making town since the reign of Henri IV, and there were about 70,000 lace makers in the region in the 1820s. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
