French Commander Saves Israel Putnam
During the French and Indian Wars (1689-1763), Israel Putnam, later a hero in the American Revolution, served as a captain. In 1758, he was at Fort Edward in New York when a group of French and Indians ambushed Putnam and a few others out scouting with him. Surrounded, Putnam had to surrender. The Indians tied Putnam to a tree. Rain prevented any further action against Putnam. That night, the French Captain Molong cut Putnam loose and rescued him.
