In neither was the proboscis at all de-veloped. Captain Scammon gives the length of a new-bornpup as 4 feet. SKULL.—The skull differs from that of Cystophora cristataas already described, but its general contour is essentially the SKULL. 747 same, of which it may be considered as a magnified type. It issomewhat arched above, the region of greatest convexity beingat the orbits. The facial portion is abruptly narrowed andsomewhat produced, the width of the skull at the base of themalar process of the maxillaries being nearly twice as great as
