The story of De Vaca about the fabu-lous seven golden cities of Cibola, filled with treas-ure, had aroused a spirit of adventure among theSpaniards of Mexico. As early as 1539 Fray Mar-cos de Nizza left Sinaloa, taking with him as guidethe negro Stephen who had been De Vacas com-panion.
