It is the center of a rich wheat-growing and grazing region. Population i8gl,1,681. REGULATOR, Electric. Many forms ofresistance-boxes are made for regulating electriccurrents for use as equalizers, stage regulators,storage-battery regulators, etc. The commonpattern involves a box containing a set of spiralresistance-wires, in which wire is economized bythe use of special switches to distribute the cur-rent through the resistance-conductors. Onelever is arranged so that its insertion in full se-cures the maximum ampere-carrying capacity, with the least resistance. As this lever is with-drawn the resistance is increased, the differentcoils being released one at a time. Anotherlever is supplied for further increasing the resist-. AD.\ REHAN. ance as it is withdrawn by placing the spirals inseries. This combination secures a regulatorhaving maximum ampere capacity on the firststep, with the spirals all in multiple, and a maxi-mum resistance on the last step, with the spiralsall in series. As a rule, the spirak r^f a resist-ance-box should be placed in a horizontal posi-tion, as they will lose heat by convection morerapidly in an upright position than when hori-zontal. Spirals are made from tinned iron, gal-vanized iron, and from German silver. Theusual method of forming them is to wind on amandrel and afterward stretch slightly to sepa-rate the convolutions. ^ tt /^ C. H. Cochrane.
