This boiler, which is extensively used by the manufacturersof New England, is, as will be seen by the illustration, of thehorizontal tubular class, and is essentially different from thewell known type only in the arrangement of the tubes. Themethod secures the passage of the products of combustionthrough the same shell twice ; forward through a part of thetubes, and backwards through the remaining ones. The man-ner of accomplishing this result can be best described byexplaining how a common tubular boiler may be remodelledso as to carry out this jirinciple. A cylindrical shell, as shown in Fig. 34—of sufficient size toencircle about one-half of the tubes, is attached to the outside of. the rear head below the water line, and extended backward tothe back, end of the setting. The encircled tubes are length-ened and carried backward to the same point; the extension isclosed in and made to communicate with the boiler proper;the inner tubes emerge to the flue leading to the chimney andthe old connection from the smoke arch is cut off. With thisarrangement, the outer tubes of the boiler—a cluster on eachside of the supplementary shell carry the products of combus-tion forward to the front smoke arch, and the inner tubes carrythem backward to the chimney. 84 Maxims and Instructions. THE TRIPLE DRAUGHT TUBULAR BOILER. Fig. 35 exhibits the boiler iu half section and shows thecourse of the heat products through one of the outer tubes andreturning through the boiler by one of the inner cluster. Fig. 36 (page 84) shows the boiler sectionally, over thebridge wall; the shaded tube ends exhibit the cluster whichreturn the heat products to the rear of the boiler, after beingbroug
