This unimposing entrance known as the Gate of Carts leads to the Imperial Harem in the Topkapi Palace that was home to sultans of the Ottoman Empire and is now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Living in the harem were the sultan's mother, his wives and children, the princes and concubines, as well as eunuchs who guarded the harem. The harem compound was added to the palace at the end of the 16th century and had more than 400 rooms.
