Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria. Coloured trans- mission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a group of Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria (upper centre). Part of their host cell is seen at lower frame. The variety of cell forms seen here is typical of mycoplasmas. They are the smallest cellular organisms known. While they are similar to primitive bacteria they lack a true cell wall and so display a variety of shapes. M. pneumoniae is one of the causes of pneumonia in healthy adults and accounts for many acute lower respiratory tract infections. It can also cause pneumonia in animals.
