Speight* In a recent paper on species of the Sphaerophoriamenthastri group occurring in the British Isles (see Speight,1973), I mentioned the existence in my own collection of aspecimen belonging to an unknown species of this then I have collected a second specimen and subsequentlysent both to Dr. Goeldlin de Tiefenau, who is undertakinga revision of the European Sphaerophoria species. Dr. Goeldlinhas now returned my specimens, determined as his speciesS. virgata, whose description was published in 1974 (seeGoeldlin, 1974). Goeldlins description of S. virgata is asfollows: — ressemble a S. philanthus (Mg.), bona species, mais lelobe inferieur des styles est beaucoup plus allonge et la profonde. Figs.: external, lateral view of left surstylus of Sphaerophoria 1: S. philanthus. Fig. 2: S. virgata. Fig. 3: S. : ll=lower lobe; ltp = larger terminal process; stp = smallerterminal process; ul = upper lobe. * Research Branch, Forest and Wildlife Service, Sidmonton Place, Bray,Co. Wicklow, Eire. SPHAEROPHORIA VIRGATA GOELDLIN (DIPT.: SYRPHIDAE) 301 echancrure situee a lextremite de la marge superieure de cememe lobe chez S. philanthus est presque inexistante chezvirgata. Judging from the three specimens available to me,S. virgata may be distinguished from other members of the5. menthastri group only by characters of the genitalia. AsGoeldlins description implies, the shape of the surstyli is highlydistinctive and in itself adequate to distinguish S. virgata fromother European Sphaerophoria species. The only British Islesspecies with surstyli somewhat similar in shape to those ofS. virgata are S.
