FELCH, Alpheus, governor of Michigan, wasborn at Limerick, Me., Sept. 28, 1806. His grand-father, Abijah Felch,was a soldier of the revolution,and having, with others, received a grant of landbetween the Great and Little Ossipee rivers, settledin the wilderness. In 1821 he became a student atPhillips Exeter academy, subsequently entered Bow-doin college, and was graduated in the class of at once began the study of law, and was admittedto practice in Bangor, Me., in 1830. He began topractice at Houlton, Me., but in 1883, owing to poorhealth, he was obliged to seek a new home. Hestarted for Vicksburg, Miss., but on arriving at Cin-cinnati was attacked with cholera, and on his re-covery determined to remove to Michigan. Hebegan practice at Monroe, but in 1843 removed toAnn Arbor, which he has since made his home. Hewas elected to the first legislature in 1835 and wasre-elected in 1836-37.
