Canal narrowboat crossing 38 meters above the river Dee on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Llangollen North Wales, a UNESCO world heritage site

Built between 1795 and 1805, the impressive structure stands out from its surroundings and yet somehow complements the landscape perfectly, making it a site that simply has to be seen up close. This is the country's highest navigable aqueduct, towering 126ft (38m) above the River Dee and supported by 18 stone piers. The canal runs through an iron trough 1007 feet ( metres) long, 11 feet 10 inches ( metres) wide and 5 feet 3 inches ( metres) deep. Clear water is fed from the River Dee at the Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen.
