Berlin Neukölln. König Otto Cafe in KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art in brew house of former Kindl Brewery Building. Burkhard Varnholt and Salome Grisard bought the building complex of the former Kindl brewery with the aim of making it into a cultural venue. The listed red-brick building was constructed between 1926 and 1930 in a style reminiscent of German Expressionism. The complex consists of a seven-storey tower, a twenty-metre-high Boiler House, a Brew House with six copper boilers, and the three-storey Power House. Zurich-based office Grisard’architektur produced the design for the new centre and the renovations were carried out by architects Dr. Krekeler & Partner. Renovation work included a new saw-tooth roof on the Power House, a redesigned eastern façade with foyer and new exterior stairway. The Brew House with its six giant copper vats houses the König Otto Cafe and there is a beer garden on the square in front of the building KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art is a non-profit institution and all proceeds support the exhibition programme. Exhibitions are sited on three floors of the former power house building and in the old Boiler room.
