The Queensboro Bridge is a double cantilever bridge spanning the East River from Manhattan to Queens via Roosevelt Island. It was competed in 1909, at a cost of $18 million and 50 lives. It has 10 lanes (4 upper and 6 lower). The Manhattan-Roosevelt cantilever span (seen here) over the West Channel of the East River, is 360 m (1,182 feet) long. An aerial tramway, opened in 1976 and modernised in 2010, runs along the north side of the bridge. Two cabins, connecting Roosevelt and Manhattan Islands, run at 15 minute intervals (continuously at rush hour periods) between am and am ( am at weekends). Each cabin, with benches at either end, but no seats, has the capacity to carry 110 people at an average speed of mph ( km/h). They climb 76m (250 feet) above the East River and travel 940m (3100 feet) in 3 minutes.
