Damascus. Ikonos satellite image of Al'Umawiyeen Square (round, upper centre), central Damascus, Syria. To the lower left of this is the site of the Damascus International Trade Fair. At 4500 years old, Damascus is the longest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It is the capital city of Syria and has been historically important, its geographical situation between Europe, Asia and Africa allowing it to develop as a major trading centre.
