Cheap Street in Frome, Somerset is one of the best preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe.

Cheap Street, Somerset It retains the original cobbled road way, and a water course down the centre of the street, a reminder of times before mains sewerage. Today there are shops offering a wide range of goods and services, although the town has a special reputation for arts and crafts. The street is named after the word ceap, which originally meant "to sell." The market town of Frome, located in the north east corner of Somerset close to the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire and Bath & North East Somerset, has a long and interesting history. There are more Grade I and II listed buildings surviving than in any other Somerset town. In the early 1700’s Frome was an important commercial centre, its prosperity built on the wool and cloth trade. At that time the population was some 10,000, four times larger than Bath for example, which gives some indication of the wealth within the town at that time. Frome now has more buildings listed as being of architectural or historic value than any other town of its size in Britain.
