Bishop UUathorne knew whatNewman wanted, and intimated to Manning thathe would gladly accept the Cardinalate if he wereallowed to retain his position at the Oratory. ThePope placed no difficulties in the way, and hispermission was conveyed to Newman in a letterfrom Manning dated March 8.
