Carl Merck (1761-1799). 1869 engraving of the German physician, naturalist and explorer Carl Heinrich Merck. Merck was the naturalist onboard the 1785-1794 Slava Rossy Arctic expedition, which spent more than ten years attempting, unsuccessfully, to find the Northwest Passage, which had remained undiscovered after Captain Cook's explorations. The Northwest Passage is a sea route through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America via waterways amidst the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
