Birth of a Gun- the Production of a 25 Pounder Field Gun, 1942 An important part in the production of the 25 pounder gun is the hardening and tempering process. After machining, the gun barrel is heated to a specified temperature for hardening in a vertical electric furnace. It is then withdrawn and lowered into an oil quenching bath after which it is tempered. This photograph shows the barrel being slowly lowered into the quenching bath.
