He died September 3, 1658, theanniversary of his two battles of Dunbar and Worcester, in the sixtieth yearof his age. He was buried with the greatest p<3mp and magnificence ; but themiserable spite of Charles II. could not allow his remains to rest in peace :they were taken up at the restoration, hung upon the gallows at Tyburn, andthen flung into a hole at its feet! He was succeeded as lord-protector by his son Richard Cromwell, who wasborn in 1626. Finding himself unable to contend with the factions hostile tohim, he resigned in the following year, and went to France on the restorationof Charles II.
