Tongland Bridge near Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. It was designed by Thomas Telford (1757-1834). Nearby is Tongland Hydro-electric power station. The bridge was the first major one in Scotland at the time of its construction. Built in 1804-8, it replaced an older bridge upstream and was the first bridge to have weight-saving hollow ribbed spandrels instead of a solid masonry arch. Though beautiful in construction, its full grandeur can only be appreciated by walkers on the nearby riverside footpath as cannot be seen in its entirety from the road over it.
