Romanian activists protested outside the Mines and Money conference in Islington. against the opening of a vast mine in Rosia Montana, Transylvania. The Mines and Money conference brings together mining companies and investors. The Rosia Montana Mine, operated by the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, RMGC will use huge quantities of cyanide in its gold extraction processes, putting at risk ground water supplies in the Danube catchment area. In addition, the mine, whilst creating hundtreds of jobs will put at risk the livelihoods of many thousands of Romanians who live in the area. Rosia Montana is an area of exceptional scenic value and has historically significant ancient Roman mining galleries, all of which will be lost to the 8km-wide opencast pit.
