They are soldunder the name of steam sterilizers and steam disin-fectors. The simplest construction for domestic purposesis the ordinary potato steamer that is used in the kitchen, the articles to be disinfected being placed in the upper com-partment, the water in the lower, the cover placed in position 284 HYGIENE OF TRANSMISSIBLE DISEASES. and the apparatus placed over the fire and the water keptboiling from ten to fifteen minutes. Several refinements ofthis apparatus are now to be had, the one that has foundmost favor being that sold as Arnolds Steam more extensive use more elaborate and varying designsof these steamers are employed. They are usually of suchsize and strength as to accommodate a mattress, or a bundle. The principle involvedis the same in all of them, the point aimed at being to keepthe articles fully exposed to the penetrating action of livesteam for the time necessary to disinfect them. For complete disinfection with streaming steam twenty-fiveminutes is necessary with loosely placed articles, while anhour is not too long when the articles are closely packed inthe apparatus. In both instances the time of disinfection isto be reckoned from the time at which steam begins to streamfreely from the apparatus. Steam Jtiidcr Pressure.—Disinfection by this process is ac-complished by subjecting tlie infected articles to steam th
