Nicholson settled in Cornwall in 1939 and began to evolve a style in which simple landscapes and still-life forms are used as the framework for elegant abstract paintings. In 1933 Nicholson met Picasso, Braque and Giacometti in Paris and became a founder member of Unit One with Paul Nash and Barbara Hepworth, dedicated to promoting European Modernist ideas.
