Coming of Age ritual - when females turn 15 in Cuba
In the Cuban tradition of la fiesta de los quince años, a girl’s 15th birthday is celebrated with a lavish, luxury-laden puberty ritual that marks her transition into a woman. The festivities typically include the girl dressing up in puffy dresses imitating eighteenth-century European court fashions and dancing a waltz with a male relative in front of her kin, friends, and neighbours. Boys’ fifteenth birthdays are not celebrated in a similarly grandiose way, making the quince a highly gender specific ritual.
