Maui, Hawaii, Maui County Fair, Orchid Show, Blue and White Vanda Orchid
The Maui County Fair is a traditional part of Maui life which has been repeated annually for nearly 100 years (in 2020, it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The traditional time is the first full weekend in October and starts off with a parade. It features rides, games, and fair food provided by E. K. Fernandez. Maui's agricultural history is reborn with the Livestock and Poultry Exhibit as well as the Horticulture Show. Talented kids and adults compete for ribbons in the Photo and Poster Contest as well as in the Hobbies & Craft Exhibit. A wonderful taste attraction is the Food Court with lots of traditional Hawaiian food such as Kalua Pig, Chicken Long Rice, Haupia, Teriyaki Pork and Malasadas — plus many mainland fair favorites. My favorite attraction is the Orchid Show where local growers and hobbyists display their most exotic varieties. Most years when I attend the Fair, I buy one from the Orchid Club (they were quite inexpensive) to enjoy in my condo then pass it on to the maid or front desk as a "thank you" for wonderful service. Blue flowers are uncommon, blue orchids even less common. To me this variety is straight out of the movie Avatar.
