Night neon portrait African American policeman leaning against NYPD car, 7th Avenue at West 45th Street, Times Square, New York

In the 1970s tourists avoided Times Square, which had become a seedy, crime-ridden and drug-infested area. In the 1990s the opening of a Disney Store attracted more family-friendly businesses and the area is a lot safer today than in the early 1990s. This is helped by a friendly but 'zero-tolerance' police presence, with an office in the base of the Times Tower.
