15 July 2017 Venice, Italy. People crossing the votive bridge over the Giudecca Canal during the Festa de Redentore. The Church of Redentore was built in honour of Christ the Redeemer in return for help in ending the plague of 1575 to 1577 in which over 50000 people, almost a third of the population, died. The plague was declared ended on 13th July 1577 and to this day Venice celebrates this event every third Sunday in July with the Festa de Redentore. While the church was being built the Doge of Venice had a temporary bridge built linking him to Giudecca and this is the origin of the temporary votive bridge built on pontoons erected today leading from the Zattere in Dorsoduro to the Church.
