On Feb. 22, 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III approved requests from the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Capitol Police (USCP) for District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG) assistance with traffic control during First Amendment demonstrations expected in the city. Vermont’s Soldiers, along with Guard members from New Jersey and West Virginia, will work with USCP officers while DCNG will work with MPD.
